Emma recently revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, set to be released on Friday, about how she infused her portrayal of Belle with a sense of fearless girl power in the new live-action adaptation of the beloved fairy tale. She shared her approach of creating a backstory for Belle to give more depth to the character.

In this version, Belle is depicted as a creative and inventive character, taking on the role of a wacky inventor similar to her father in the animated version. The opening scene highlights the challenges Belle faces in a society where boys go to school while girls are expected to do household chores like laundry.

To challenge these norms, Belle invents a washing machine powered by a donkey, which not only frees the girls from their chores but also allows her to teach one of them how to read.

'In the original you don't get much sense of Belle, who she is before she meets Beast, so I wanted to create a backstory,' the 26-year-old recently said

The young adult explained that the original version of the story didn’t provide much insight into Belle’s character before she encounters the Beast. Therefore, she felt it was important to develop a backstory for the character.

“We transformed her into this eccentric inventor, stepping into the shoes of her father’s role in the animated series,” explained Belle.

Watson, known for her role in Harry Potter, expressed her thoughts on the destruction of the washing machine, stating, “They believe women should not be allowed to read, and it goes beyond that.” She added, “Breaking the washing machine symbolizes their attempt to break her spirit and mold her into a more socially acceptable version of herself.”
It’s no surprise that Belle, played by Emma Watson, begins to see admirable qualities in the Beast, portrayed by Dan Stevens from Downton Abbey, as she becomes intertwined in his world.
As we all know, the Beast is actually a cursed prince trapped in the form of a monstrous creature, living in isolation in his castle.
